Robot Dogs & Quadrupeds
Quadrupeds walk where wheels struggle: stairs, gravel, plant rooms and uneven ground. Industrial models carry sensors for inspection and mapping, while research and consumer models give labs and enthusiasts an agile platform to build on.

Buying advice
Itemise what each quadruped price includes
In October 2026, the Weilan AlphaDog opened the price range at around $2,700 and the ANYmal C closed it at around $250,000, and every listing had a published price. With a spread that wide, the headline figure says little until you know what it buys. Ask each maker to itemise software licences, payload mounts, training days, a support contract and spare batteries, then compare complete working kits rather than bare robots. Check too whether updates to the autonomy software are included for the life of the robot or sold as an annual renewal, because that line can decide the real cost over several years of inspection rounds.
A draft standard for robots that balance
Legged robots stay upright by constantly correcting their balance, which brings a hazard wheeled robots rarely have: the fall. ISO is drafting ISO/CD 25785-1 to cover dynamically stable industrial mobile robots, legged ones included, in workplaces where public access is restricted. It is still a committee draft, so no maker can claim conformity with it yet. Ask how each supplier assesses fall, pinch and collision risks today, what the robot does when it loses power mid-stride, and whether it intends to follow the standard once published. The draft leaves out consumer household robots, so a hobby quadruped used in a lab will not be judged against it.
Ask about feet, joints and modifications
Foot design gets less attention than motors or cameras, yet it shapes grip on wet steel, loose gravel and slopes. In npj Robotics, researchers field-tested a mountain goat-inspired hoof built for passive slip resistance on inclined natural terrain and compared it with the feet used on ANYmal robots. Ask whether alternative feet exist for your surfaces and request a trial on the worst one. MIT's mini cheetah, assembled from commercially available motors, is a reminder that research groups often need hardware they can open up and change. Find out which joints, feet and covers you may modify without voiding the warranty, and whether repair parts are sold separately.
What to look for
- Payload, runtime and terrain rating for the routes you need covered
- Weather and dust protection if it will work outdoors or in plant rooms
- SDK and payload interfaces for adding your own sensors and software
Common questions
What can an industrial robot dog do?
Typical uses include routine inspection rounds, thermal and acoustic checks, site mapping and remote monitoring in places that are hazardous or hard to reach. Capability depends on the model and the payloads fitted.
Is a lower-cost robot dog a good research platform?
Lower-cost quadrupeds can be a practical way to learn locomotion and programming. Industrial platforms add payload capacity, ruggedness and enterprise software. Match the platform to the work you plan to publish or deploy.
